Burst Pipe

What to Do When a Pipe Bursts in Your Home

A burst pipe can flood your home in minutes — but acting fast can save you thousands in damage. Here’s what to do immediately:

1. Shut Off the Water

Find your main shut-off valve and turn it off. This stops the flooding at the source.

2. Turn Off Electricity (If Needed)

If water is near outlets or appliances, shut off power to that area. Safety first!

3. Drain the System

Open faucets and flush toilets to release pressure and empty remaining water.

4. Call a Pro

You’ll need a licensed plumber and possibly a water damage restoration team. The faster they respond, the less damage you’ll have.

5. Start Cleanup

If it’s safe, remove standing water with towels or a wet/dry vac. Use fans to begin drying right away.

6. Document Everything

Take photos for your insurance company before cleanup begins.

7. File an Insurance Claim

Call your provider to report the damage and start the claims process.

Pro Tip: Know where your shut-off valve is before an emergency happens — and keep emergency contacts saved in your phone.
